Essential Oil Profile: Vetiver

Grounding properties for mind and body, skincare benefits, prevention of soil corrosion, fighting water pollution … Vetiver is a wonder plant that is truly an ally for our health and that of the planet.

Pranarōm’s organic Vetiver essential oil (Vetiveria zizanoides) has an earthy aroma and a more viscous consistency than most other EOs. Sourced from the long spindly roots of a grass that is native to the areas of India and Sri Lanka, Vetiver (known as Khus in India) averages 3 feet in height and reaches down to greater depths with its roots, averaging nine feet in length. Over time Vetiver has become well acclimated to other subtropical regions, including Reunion Island and Madagascar.

Vetiver’s growth characteristic gives it the ability to hold the ground in place where potential erosion threatens the landscape. Vetiver can also help keep flood waters from becoming contaminated, all thanks to its net-like roots. Often woven into mats, baskets, and incense, the roots also provide one of the essential oils used in our Glow Moisture Treatment oil from our Plant Beautiful Organic Skincare line and in our Sleep Aid Wellness Blend.

Well known for its woody, earthy, and ever-so-slightly smokey scent, Vetiver has long been used in perfumery. But Vetiver also works wonders in skin care! Energetically cooling and superficially smoothing, this essential oil can absorb into the skin in ways other oils cannot. Vetiver can support skin that is weak, loose, or fatigued and is therefore a great addition to skin care for face and body.

Vetiver comes from the Poaceae botanical family with primary constituents of sesquiterpenes vetiven & vetivazulene, and sesquiterpenol vetivenol. These constituents offer therapeutic properties, which include calming and soothing both mind and body, as well as supporting circulation.

Emotionally grounding and centering, Vetiver has long been an ally for those with anxious thoughts and feelings. The scent of this oil can help connect you to yourself, your surroundings, and the earth on which we live. It is therefore incredibly helpful when connecting to or strengthening the root chakra. 5 Tips for Productivity

Thursday, April 6th, 2023 | Article by: Mathilde Hardy Staying productive when you’re feeling unmotivated. We all hit that point in our day or week where we feel unmotivated, whether that’s work, home, school, etc. Sometimes it just gets hard and even the simplest of tasks feel tedious. Everyone reaches that point, but it’s how you get over those feelings that matters. Here are 5 ways you can overcome your unproductiveness and finish off your day or week on the right foot! Taking breaks. Whether it’s every hour or every 20 minutes, taking breaks is especially important to maintain productivity. What you do during your break is equally important. I always like to get up and stretch, go grab a cup of coffee or tea, take a walk around the block, make a snack, etc. Do something that gets you moving and distracted from the task you’re trying to complete – especially if it’s a tedious one. Avoid going on your phone because most of the time you’ll end up staying on your phone longer than you anticipated. The same goes for your computer: if you’re working on a task on your computer, make it a point to leave it for at least 5 minutes when you take a break. Prioritizing your tasks. When you have a long list of tasks to complete before the end of your day or week, it’s easy to lose motivation. That’s why prioritizing the most important ones is a good way to make sure you get through your “to-dos.” Try writing down your top 3 most important ones for the day/week and work through them at your own pace. Once you’re done, write down the next 3. Now your focus is on 3 at a time and you don’t feel pressured to get the rest done at the same time. Having an ideal work environment. Our surroundings play a larger part in our productivity than we think. I know that when my desk is clean and organized, I feel less frazzled and overwhelmed. But it’s also easy for my desk to get disorganized. That’s why every morning before I start work, I take 5 minutes to get myself situated and organized. It helps me feel less stressed and more productive. Our Mental Clarity and Stress Recovery essential oil wellness formulas are great for adding a unique aroma to your work environment. They help promote productivity and relaxation at any point of the day. Asking for help. No person should ever feel like they need to get everything done on their own. Asking for help for whichever task you’re trying to complete is a great idea. Having an extra set of hands should never be unwanted and being able to interact with others is beneficial for finding motivation and productivity.

Virgin Plant Oil Profile: Black Cumin

Thursday, April 27th, 2023 | Article by: Liza Docken Also known as black seed, Nigella sativa’s well-loved oil is most commonly known for its internal usage. When used topically, however, it offers a treasure trove of skincare and haircare benefits. Cold pressed from the first pressing of Nigella sativa seeds, our Black Cumin Virgin Plant Oil is light yellow to light green in color and has a smell very reminiscent of the cumin seeds (Cuminum cyminum) we are perhaps more familiar with here in the United States. Nigella sativa is native to Southern Europe, North Africa, and Southwest Asia. Today this plant is cultivated in many areas, including the Middle Eastern Mediterranean region, India, Pakistan, Syria, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. The mention and presence of black cumin seed has deep roots in history. Seeds were found in Tutankhamen’s tomb, were mentioned in the Old Testament, and praised by the Prophet Muhammad as being able to “cure everything but death.” Additionally, the Persian Muslim physician and philosopher Avicenna recommended black cumin seeds to promote energy and aid in recovery from fatigue in his book The Cannon of Medicine c.1025 AD. Modern era enthusiasts point to black cumin’s thymoquinone as one major reason for this oil’s ability to do so much. Comprised primarily of oleic and linoleic acid, these fatty acids, with thymoquinone, lend themselves to black cumin’s ability to support the body’s management of inflammation and offer antioxidant qualities. The therapeutic actions most commonly associated with black cumin oil are antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, emollient, skin penetration enhancer, and hyperpigmentation reduction Many sources suggest black cumin VPO as an option for those with blemish-prone skin, due to the antimicrobial nature of this oil. At Pranarōm, we include black cumin in our Clear Treatment Moisture Oil, a part of our Organic Plant Beautiful Skincare line. Light hair loss is another symptom that black cumin VPO can support through its calming abilities, which keep the scalp healthy and functioning well. Our Strong Roots Hair Oil includes this VPO, in conjunction with Rosemary and Lavender essential oils, to support follicle function and scalp health. Pro Tip: For dry hair, between washes, spray ends of the hair with hydrosol of choice. Then place on drop of Black Cumin Virgin Plant oil in the palm, rub hands together to warm the oil, and run through the still-damp end of the hair to nourish and smooth the hair strands. This will protect the hair from drying out further before your next wash.
