Easy techniques to naturally protect & defend your health.
As autumn arrives, we're all looking for ways to support our health and feel our best despite the onset of cold & flu season. Protecting yourself naturally with essential oils is easy - try these three techniques for everyday immune support.
1. Essential Oil Diffusion
Spreading essential oils through your home via diffusion is one of the best - and most enjoyable! - ways to reap their benefits. This method not only helps to purify and freshen the air in your home, it can also support your respiratory system, mood & immune health.
Essential oil suggestions: Citrus oils (lemon, sweet orange, or bergamot) + spices (cinnamon bark & clove bud) are especially nice for this purpose, as are refreshing, minty & herbaceous oils like ravintsara, rosemary & eucalyptus.
2. DIY Essential Oil Vapor Rub
Creating your own respiratory rub is one of the simplest and most comforting ways to use essential oils when you're feeling under the weather. Blend oils at a 1-2% dilution (about 6-12 drops) per ounce of carrier oil (try one of our Virgin Plant Oils), and apply your mixture to your chest, upper back, or right around your nostrils.
Minty oils like peppermint, rosemary, eucalyptus & ravintsara are best for this application – they feel cool on the skin and often cause a “tingling” effect while refreshing your nasal passages.
3. The Soles of your Feet
Because the soles of your feet do not produce oil (sebum), they are one of the best areas for quick absorption into the bloodstream. The skin also tends to be tougher on your soles and less prone to sensitivity.
This method is especially useful right before you go to bed. Apply 1-2 drops neat, rubbing the soles of your feet together to help the oil absorb. Wear cotton socks if you’re worried about staining your sheets.
Because the skin on the soles of your feet is tougher, essential oils can be used straight with this application especially if you are only using the oils for 1-4 days in a row. If you’re at all concerned, however, or using for an extended period of time, don’t hesitate to dilute your oils in a carrier oil at 50%.
Children (under the age of 18) should always use a dilution rate of 50% or less for this application.
