What is a Hydrosol?

A hydrosol — also known as a floral water or aromatic water — is the gently aromatic water that results when plants are steam-distilled to produce essential oils. As the steam passes through plant material and condenses, two products are produced at once: the essential oil (concentrated and potent) and the hydrosol (much more diluted, gentle, and water-soluble).

Hydrosols carry the water-soluble compounds of the plant — making them remarkably gentle, suitable for sensitive skin, and easy to use undiluted, directly onto the skin. They're often described as the "softer side" of aromatherapy.

How to use a Hydrosol

Hydrosols are versatile and incredibly easy to work with. A few of our favorite ways to use them:

1. As a facial mist: Spritz directly onto cleansed skin morning and night for a hydrating refresh. Hold the bottle about 6 inches from your face, eyes closed.
2. As a toner: Apply to a cotton round and sweep gently across cleansed skin before serums or moisturizers.
3. As a refresh anytime: Keep one at your desk or in your bag for a midday spritz — especially welcome on hot days, after travel, or after a workout.
4. In skincare layering: Mist before applying a serum, oil, or moisturizer to add a layer of hydration and help products absorb beautifully.
