Why do essential oils need to be diluted in a fatty oil for internal use? Because essential oils are hydrophobic, ingesting them with water is not a safe or optimally effective method. Instead of being carried down to your digestive system with the water, they cling to the first fatty substance they come in contact with – your oral and your esophageal tissue. Both of these are very delicate and should not be exposed repeatedly to the highly concentrated nature of essential oil.
