Ingredient Profile: Camellia Seed Oil

Camellia seed virgin plant oil is an integral ingredient in the Pranarōm Organic Skincare line, offering its reparative and protective properties to our Glow Moisture Treatment Oil.

This lesser known, nutrient rich virgin plant oil comes from the seeds of the camellia oleifera evergreen shrub. With waxy leaves and white flowers, these shrubs (sometimes small trees) are native to China, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam and are often used in decorative gardens in other parts of the world, too. When growing in the wild, Camellia is often found on streambanks or in thickets at higher elevations, thriving in partial shade and moist, organically rich soil.

Camellia Oil, also known as Tea Oil or Tsubaki Oil, is extracted by cold-pressing the seeds of this winter-flowering shrub. Camellia offers an EFA (essential fatty acid) profile high in monounsaturated oleic acid (~80%), giving Camellia oil excellent skin-conditioning properties.

Due to the tannins present in the seeds, this oil will not clog pores or leave an oily feel when used on its own. In addition to its beneficial fats, Camellia contains protective polyphenols, vitamins A, B, C, and E, and other antioxidants. These help support the skin when faced with sun damage and environmental exposure, all while rejuvenating its appearance and maintaining proper moisture levels.
